Hélène Picard

Mezzo-soprano, Canada

Noted for her qualities in the Baroque repertoire, Hélène Picard is scheduled for many concerts as a soloist and is recognized for her interpretation of roles such as Diane (Actéon), Spring and The Second Fairy (The Fairy Queen), Cupid (Venus and Adonis), Second Woman, Spirit and Second Witch (Dido and Aeneas). She participated for the first time in the fall of 2021 in the Montreal Bach Festival, which re-engaged her for its 2022 edition. Hélène performed the role of Carmen in La Tragédie de Carmen under the direction of Jean-François Rivest and directed by François Racine in April 2022. She also played Larina (Eugene Onegin) during the summer of 2022 as part of the Highlands Summer Opera Festival (Ontario, Canada). Interested in the work of current composers, she regularly participates in the creation of contemporary works. She will embody The Protagonist in the first opera, Naissances, by composer Gabo Champagne in May 2023 as part of the musical season « Codes d'accès » in Montreal.

Hélène completed a vocal arts degree within the adult choir of the Maîtrise de Notre Dame de Paris before coming to study at the University of Montreal, first in a Master's program and then in a PhD program that she just obtained in 2023. Passionate about the arts, she also holds a Bachelor's degree in Modern Literature with a Cinema specialization from Paris III Sorbonne Nouvelle (2011) and in Music with a Dramaturgy specialization from Paris VIII (2013).

Convinced that culture should be accessible to all, Hélène wrote a playful show titled Mélom'âne, which entered the repertoire of educational workshops at the Montreal Opera. With the complicity of director François Racine, this participatory musical tale will be offered to pre-school children starting this fall. Hélène also works as an artist-mediator in collaboration with the Opéra de Montréal for the animation of various other musical workshops.

Also active in the field of concert music, she has imagined a series of fictional recitals paying tribute to women musicians, the first installment of which, "Baroque Muses," was performed in March 2022 at the Chapelle historique du Bon Pasteur. The second installment, based on a program dedicated to Pauline Viardot, will be given in October 2023 alongside Rose Naggar-Tremblay (contralto), Julien Leblanc (pianist), and Laurent Turcot (historian).
