Dear emerging Stage Directors, the Atelier lyrique de l'Opéra de Montréal is pleased to announce the opening of its National Auditions for stage directors for the first time!

A top-tier artists' residency for Canadian opera singers and pianist-vocal coaches, the Atelier lyrique operates within Opéra de Montréal and serves as a springboard to a professional career in opera. Offering innovative, personalized training in a bilingual environment, l'Atelier covers the full spectrum of artistic, personal and professional development. With world-class instructors, regular stage experience and networking opportunities, l'Atelier ensures that everyone has access to their full career potential.

Contract duration

End of August 2025 to May 2026.

Auditions with the selected candidates will take place on 15 or 16 January 2025 in Montreal.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Candidates must demonstrate an interest in opera
  • Candidates will have finished their studies and must have foundational experience as a director or assistant director in opera, musical theater or theater at university, independent and/or professional level.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with singers to fuse musical and dramatic interpretation
  • They should have at minimum a basic knowledge of operatic repertoire or be able to read a musical score at basic level.
  • Candidates must be able to work fluently in French and English, and have an aptitude for learning languages
  • Candidates must demonstrate a strong sense of collaboration, leadership, and effective communication skills.
  • They have the versatility to operate within the Atelier lyrique, collaborations with external partners, and activites across other departments at Opéra de Montréal
  • They are interested in career mentorship and developping their artistic, professional, and leadership skills in opera
  • They must know how to work within a team, with budgetary and time constraints. They must have the capacity to manage teams and express themselves clearly infront of groups of people.

  3. An audition will be held on January 15 & 16, 2025*, and here is what they need to prepare:

WHAT TO PREPARE

 

*For candidates not based in Montreal, we will be offering hotel accommodations for 1 night, as well as a per diem. Travel to Montréal will be at the cost of the candidate.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUBMIT IN ADDITION TO YOUR ONLINE FORM
  • Complete, up-to-date curriculum vitae; including directing and assistant directing experience (opera, musical theater, theater, etc.)
  • A portfolio of projects completed to date, in cluding production images for works you have directed or assisted (8 pages max.)
  • Photo (8“ x 10”)
  • Certificate of birth and citizenship: the candidate must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident at the time of application
  • References: contact information (name, title, telephone number, e-mail address) of two professionals in the music industry who can attest to the quality of your work and your professional ethics.
  • Answer one of the following questions in a Word document (500 words))
  1. What motivates you to pursue a professional career as a stage director?
  2. What do you hope to gain from a residency at the Atelier lyrique?
  3. What are your goals for the next 5 years?
  • Please submit a concept for a project you have already completed (5 pages max.). This can be a project included within your portfolio. Explain in greater detail about your ideas on the concepts: sets, costumes, lighting, audience engagement and everything else related to this project, as well as how music and text interact with each other.
