The Consul

A unique opportunity to see the stars of tomorrow on stage at substantially affordable prices!

The Atelier lyrique has been a training ground for young professional opera singers since 1984. For the seventh consecutive season, these young singers are presenting a production of their very own in collaboration with the National Theatre School of Canada and the Monument-National.

SYNOPSIS

Giancarlo Menotti combined tradition with modernism in operas that often premiered on the radio, on television, or on the Broadway stage. Using flights of lyricism in the best bel canto tradition together with the dissonance of his era, Menotti created a modern-day tragedy in which indifference and bureaucracy are truly more deadly than guns. In the consul’s waiting room, anxious men and women hope to obtain the magic piece of paper that will allow them to leave their totalitarian country. Among them is Magda Sorel. She wants to go join her husband who is on the run, hounded by the secret police, but Magda comes up against a mountain of forms and an unsparing secretary…
