For participants dealing with mental health issues

ET at the Opera is a co-creation project taking place one evening per week over the course of 15 weeks. Some ten participants of ages 15 to 24, dealing with mental health issues, become both artisans and performers in a creative process resulting in a mini-opera. They re-write the story and design the sets, costumes, and props, right in Place des Arts, guided by a team of professional artists. To date, participants have reimagined Verdi’s Rigoletto, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Verdi’s La Traviata, and Bilodeau/Bouchard’s La beauté du monde.

The goal of this project is to have participants experience every aspect of the operatic art form by working alongside the professional artists, designers, and craftspeople involved (opera singers, theatre artists, designers, a librettist, a composer, and musicians), fostering social reintegration through creative endeavour. Their work is performed before an audience—free of charge—twice a year, in a professional setting.
