Andrea Van Pelt, pianist

“For sure. I have never worked in such a warm and caring environment, and I made many friends. I am grateful for everything I have been given here and I will always keep an eye on what is going on here. I will come back as often as I can, as soon as the pandemic is behind us.”

Holly Kroeker, pianist / coach

From the time she auditioned, Holly felt that the entire Atelier team welcomed her with open arms, warmth, and kindness. Here, I know that I can take risks, embrace who I am and push my ideas furtherThis is essential for learning!” It is, indeed, not enough to practice at home in one’s living room for hours on end. One must also be immersed at the heart of the action. The Atelier enabled me to really enter into the thick of it, to lead a rehearsal, try things out, make mistakes, start over. And we are given the opportunity to work in different contexts, with different conductors and orchestras, in various musical styles.

AN INNOVATIVE AND PERSONALIZED TRAINING

THE OPERA IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE OPERA!
DEVELOP LOCAL TALENT

When the pandemic forced performance venues to close and put our productions on hiatus, OdM team took this downtime as an opportunity to look back on our recent accomplishments. Canadian talent is abundant and the Opéra de Montréal wishes to act as a catalyst for the next generation of canadian lyric artists.

a new 100% feminine Quebec creation

In 2018, following the very first Mécénat Musica 3 Femmes competition, we invited the two recipients of the prize—composer Laurence Jobidon and playwright Pascale St-Onge—to compose the opera L'hiver attend beaucoup de moi. In 2019-2020, two of our singers-in-residence had the wonderful opportunity to be the first artists to perform the roles in this new work from Quebec, presented in world premiere. How has this experience allowed them to develop as artists?

A WORD FROM FORMER ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

CAROL-ANNE FRASER, PIANIST / Coach
ATELIER 2016-2018

"At the Atelier, I was part of a big team, like a family. The best part of my job at the Atelier was to see the singers evolve over a period of two years, to see them become complete artists, ready to venture into the professional world and share their love of opera."

JENNIFER SZETO, PIANIST / COACH
ATELIER 2012-2014

"Opéra de Montréal was my first exposure to the professional world, and I couldn't be more grateful for my experience as a young pianist and coach at the Atelier Lyrique. The "family" quality of this program creates a safe space for which we can blossom, and I found here not only a feeling of support and care, but all the tools I needed to become the artist I wanted to be."
