4 OPERAS STARTING AT $109

For the 22/23 season, we sought to recreate those special moments that would stop the clock and carry us away, with stories that would take our breath away. Stories that are told as only opera can, with richness, beauty, and emotional intensity.

A young woman’s dangerous quest to avenge her mother in Verdi’s Il Trovatore; the shattering war drama at the heart of Bilodeau’s La beauté du monde; a journey to the heart of Spanish poet Federico García Lorca’s life and political ideals in Golijov’s Ainadamar; the tragic fate of a mother abandoned by the love of her life in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly; and the rich legacy of a writer who transformed her own dualities into a relentless force, the Quebec creation Yourcenar—Une île de passions. Such an impressive array of stories, which the Opéra de Montréal will share with you this upcoming season. Each in its unique way, these narratives immerse us in a universe, a set of emotions that is all their own.

VERDI

Can we run away from the consequences of our actions, or will they haunt us for all eternity? Oscillating between fantasy and reality in a play of shadow and light, this new production of Il Trovatore featuring a stunning cast, including Etienne Dupuis, Nicole Car and Marie-Nicole Lemieux, proves that revenge comes at a heavy price.

This time, he teams up with composer Julien Bilodeau. A proof of the inestimable value of art and beauty.

GOLIJOV | HWANG

Ainadamar presents three images, three flashbacks to different key periods in the life of the poet and playwright Federico García Lorca through the eyes of his muse Margarita Xirgu. It features an orchestration whose striking intensity parallels the civil war that raged in Spain at the time, interwoven with the sounds of horse hooves and gunshots, where flamenco accents become the voice of pain.

PUCCINI

Puccini once said that it was the most sincere and expressive work he had ever written. Beyond the conflict between two civilizations, Madama Butterfly is an ode to love and to women. For this stunning production, two women also play the key roles of orchestral conductor and stage director.
