Candidates planning a career in opera are selected annually at auditions held in Montréal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver. Call backs are held in Montréal. The standards are very high as apprentices are called upon to perform in Opéra de Montréal productions as early as their first year. All things being equal, precedence is given to those 28 years old and younger. Diplomas are not required but thorough training in vocal technique and solfeggio (sight-reading) is essential for singers. Members are remunerated throughout their entire apprenticeship, benefit from free coaching and training, and receive financial help to assist in the first steps of their careers (auditions, etc.).
